First Light · Concept stage

Support, choice and hope.

A concept shaped by lived experience, with dignity at its centre.

A more compassionate starting point

First Light is a Foundation Forward concept for people affected by domestic and family violence, including before, during and after separation.

Its purpose is to support dignity, choice and empowerment. It is being shaped by lived experience and a commitment to trauma-informed design, with respect for each person’s circumstances and pace.

Trauma can affect how people remember and talk about what has happened. Seeking help should not add to that distress. First Light begins with the belief that people deserve compassion and respect, without pressure to follow a particular path.

What guides First Light

Dignity. Choice. Hope.

Dignity

Everyone deserves to be heard and treated with care and respect. A person is more than what has happened to them.

Choice

People deserve a say in the support they receive, with space to make their own choices and move at their own pace.

Hope

Even when the way ahead feels uncertain, people deserve support and the chance to look towards a brighter future.

The experience behind First Light

Understanding without judgement

First Light grew from my own lived experience of domestic and family violence, and the experiences of people around me. I know how difficult it can feel to explain what happened or know where to begin. I want this work to make room for compassion, dignity and hope.
